Session 3: Building Blocks of Internal Controls, Policies & Procedures >>

Good policies and procedures are the everyday tools of grants compliance. In this session, we’ll demystify internal controls and show how even small organizations can put simple, effective safeguards in place. We’ll cover what needs to be written down, who should do what, and how to structure basic processes so you’re better prepared for audits and monitoring.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the fundamental principles of internal controls in plain language.
  • Review key internal control expectations in 2 CFR 200.
  • Understand the difference between preventive and detective controls and why segregation of duties matters.
  • See examples of common, practical control activities for high‑risk areas.
